Outline of Initial Vaccination Objectives Regarding Containing Poliomyelitis Throughout the Twentieth Century

Evaluating the Long Term Objectives of the Poliomyelitis Vaccine Campaign in Comparison with Current Vaccination Plans for the Covid-19 virus in 2020

Poliomyelitis also referred to as polio is an infectious viral disease caused by the poliovirus and can be directly prevented through vaccination. Primarily targeting the central nervous system, it results in muscle weakness, progressing to flaccid paralysis. This can occur during the time space of a few hours to a few days and lead to a lifetime of disability and death. The vaccine was released in the 1950's, and immediately afterward the United States observed a significant decline in cases.

Although the initial vaccination efforts were implemented during the 1950's, the disease continued to remain present throughout the century into the 1990's. As access to the vaccine was expanded, the incident rate of the infection, simultaneously declined.
By the end of the century, substantial efforts were made in an attempt to eliminate the virus. Organized programs were developed in order to outline the necessary objectives to undertake such an initiative, although had it been implemented nearly half a century prior instead, it would have reduced the amount of individuals impacted by a third.

There are several outlines for long term stages for an overall comprehensive plan. The goal is separated into segments and time frames specifying objectives. The first objective is to identify the location of the virus in its greatest spread, detect the location, and interrupt any further spread. How to prevent the transmission of a virus in its early or end stages is through the direct identification of those infected, and by improving public access to knowledge and information regarding vaccination. The next objective included providing access to the main vaccine for all countries. The third priority pertains to the containment and validation of working towards eradication of the virus. The last objective is to organize all acquired data and plans implemented and record them.
This is an alternate timeframe outline from 2013 to 2018 describing the ongoing effort to contain and eliminate the polio virus from the mainstream population. Although the vaccine has been available since the 1950's the disease continues to impact individuals in 2020.
