Outline of Initial Vaccination Objectives Regarding Containing Poliomyelitis Throughout the Twentieth Century
Evaluating the Long Term Objectives of the Poliomyelitis Vaccine Campaign in Comparison with Current Vaccination Plans for the Covid-19 virus in 2020
Poliomyelitis also referred to as polio is an infectious viral disease caused by the poliovirus and can be directly prevented through vaccination. Primarily targeting the central nervous system, it results in muscle weakness, progressing to flaccid paralysis. This can occur during the time space of a few hours to a few days and lead to a lifetime of disability and death. The vaccine was released in the 1950's, and immediately afterward the United States observed a significant decline in cases.
Although the initial vaccination efforts were implemented during the 1950's, the disease continued to remain present throughout the century into the 1990's. As access to the vaccine was expanded, the incident rate of the infection, simultaneously declined.
By the end of the century, substantial efforts were made in an attempt to eliminate the virus. Organized programs were developed in order to outline the necessary objectives to undertake such an initiative, although had it been implemented nearly half a century prior instead, it would have reduced the amount of individuals impacted by a third.
